❗ IMPORTANT
If you use SSO functionality for user authentication, you will need to replace the Assertion Consumer Service URL (ACS URL) https://spatial.chat/auth/saml/assertio with https://app.spatial.chat/auth/saml/assertion. 

You have to do it on the 21st of July, or otherwise, your users won't be able to access the space. You don't need to change the configuration if you have a custom domain.

  • Avatar teleportation - you don’t need to interrupt your group meetings anymore if you want to ask somebody to go to another place in the Space. Just move your avatar to this place and invite the person. If this person accepts your invitation the avatar will be moved automatically🥳
  • Connection quality improvement - Due to our main idea, communications are the most important thing in our modern world. That’s why we need to keep an eye on the quality of connection during online communication. We improve it every day and will never stop doing that🚀
  • Small improvements and bug fixes - also we made a lot of small technical improvements. As a user you cannot see it as a feature but during use, you can feel it every time because SpatialChat is better and better with each new release 😇

Tuesday, June 21st, 2022 at 10:40am UTC our engineering team was performing a routine resizing of our server capacity. Unfortunately, this time the process lead to unexpected connectivity issues between internal services, and a downtime of 40 minutes was observed. 

We apologize for the inconvenience caused. Any such incident gives us a chance to improve our systems further and protect the service from interruptions.

That’s why we try to improve it each release👩‍💻 Within this one we’ve added an indicator when the speaker is speaking because it’s a small thing but it affects the experience and it’s so important!

  • New Stage - here’s a new improved version of the stage for work in larger teams. Now you can have up to 12 speakers on Stage simultaneously! Also, there is a new grid which is better than ever🙂

    We made a deep research on online presenters’ problems and the main is feelings of “black-box” when you present for an invisible audience and you can’t feel their feedback. That’s why we’ve added a new view of “the first rows” where you can see the most active listeners and feel like a part of a real stage. You can see their last messages and reactions from the Room Chat and do your presentation with real vibes.

    Also, we’ve worked with a mobile version and made it comfortable for use with any device🤩 
  • Users’ onboarding in Dashboard - now the way for new users is much easier because we’ve added a short onboarding when you’re there for the first time🙀 Be calm your users will understand how SpatialChat works even before you invite them to call!
  • Public demo widget in Dashboard - if you have any questions or interesting insights about SpatialChat please join in our weekly demo. Now it’s so easy just through your Dashboard😎
  • Direct messages improvement - we know how texting can be important during collaborative work that’s why we’ve re-built our direct messages for the best experience. Now you can start your chat just with one click and your teammate can text you even if you aren’t in Space right now😱 
  • iPad video issues - the world is changing and we need to adapt to it. After some changes in the Safari browser we had some issues with video playing on the iPad. But now it’s fixed and works fine😇

Dear SpatialChat user,

TL;DR;

  • The free tier is now by default 5 people max, not 25 (starting May 20th, 2022, prior notification was sent to everyone last week)
  • You can apply for a 25-people free tier if you are a non-profit community, NPO, solo educator, or public educational institution (more details below). Click here to apply for 25-people free tier.
  • SpatialChat is still good for virtual events (especially in virtual networking, workshop facilitation, or poster session cases). However, future focus will be more on virtual office features (the demand for which is a growing trend worldwide) and less on new virtual event features (because there's a global trend of events steadily coming back to in-person)
  • The "Virtual office" by our definition, is a virtual space capable of reproducing 4 key positive features of real offices:
    • 1/ Being able to share your monitor and collaborate with a colleague (e.g. work together on a document in Google Docs, do pair programming, discuss Figma UI prototypes and much more) in a room
    • 2/ Being able to draw things on a whiteboard in a meeting room
    • 3/ Watercooler talk, where you hang out with colleagues and very often come up with creative ideas
    • 4/ All-hands
    • These 4 things are what we do at SpatialChat for your distributed team

Long version

It’s been more than two years since we launched SpatialChat. Now we are a team of 50 team members from 12 different countries. During the growth stage, we were trying to find SpatialChat’s market positioning. Our product has been used for remote offices, virtual events, online conferences, education, poster session, and more - and it was hard to define our primary positioning.

We’ve been developing SpatialChat with a dual product proposition for the first two years: a virtual event platform and a virtual office for teams. However, since many conferences worldwide are steadily going back to in-person, it is a great time to shift our full focus to virtual offices. With that being said, SpatialChat is still the same product that you loved to organize your virtual events.

While talking to many leaders of teams using SpatialChat, we found key benefits of real offices:

  1. Ability to sit down together and see the work from the monitor (a document, a whiteboard, a PowerPoint presentation, a source code for pair programming, and more)
  2. Ability to use a whiteboard in a meeting room to draw infrastructure schemes, financial flows, brainstorm, and much more
  3. A water cooler scenario: lots of most creative moments happen while drinking coffee together
  4. All-hands with team leaders - a very important company culture building activity.

A virtual platform capable of implementing the above is a virtual office product - and so is SpatialChat.

Here’s the direction we are now headed towards after me & my team directly talking to hundreds of virtual office teams and followed a worldwide clue: remote work is a global trend.

SpatialChat is a virtual workspace for remote teams to get synchronous work done.

Our development roadmap will be focused more on remote work, virtual offices, and hybrid collaboration as it was from the beginning.Meanwhile, you are most welcome to use SpatialChat for any other virtual event concepts, and we will try to help you as much as we can. SpatialChat is still capable of running your virtual event, especially a poster session, a networking event, or a facilitated workshop and our Stage feature is going to be even more awesome soon.

With that being said, starting May 20th, 2022 spaces under the Free plan will be supported by shared server resources and the limit of maximum people per Free space will be reduced from 25 to 5 people.

Some insights into our internal economics

Historically, we’ve been running as a virtual event platform with an emphasis on in-person meeting experience, which was perfect for networking, socializing or collaborative meetups such as facilitated workshops. Their average session time per user has always been ranging from 60 to 90 minutes per person and took irregular basis (by that I mean “not every day”). And both our 25-ppl Free plan and $2/day Day Passes are running very well in this scenario (keep in mind that one of our major competitors has a $3/day price).

However, with hundreds of remote teams using SpatialChat every day at an average 4-hour per day session time per team member, this is an order of magnitude longer operating cost that running 1.5-hour irregular meetings. We can sustain a virtual office scenario at a 5-people freemium plan and more starting at just $7/person/month. And since our product is essentially a virtual real estate to gather entire teams around getting synchronous work done, we are more compared to the real office which costs $400-800 USD/month per employee depending on where you are worldwide. 

So the $7/mo/person is a very cheap cost and our further development roadmap is committed to improving the experience of getting work done together remotely. And we cannot keep the free tier for 6-25 people teams heavily relying on SpatialChat every day. And $7/mo/seat is a very comparable price with collaborative products such as Slack.I always believed from our 1st day that we should provide a product that is both affordable for different kinds of customers and also economically viable so we don’t have to raise funds just to sustain operations.

However, there’s more

I do also understand that virtual office is not the only usage scenario of SpatialChat and users are very different in their use cases and needs. That being said, I’d like to share some exceptions for our freemium plan change:

  • If you are a non-profit community, educator or a public educational institution just let us know (details below) and we will keep a 25-ppl limit SpatialChat for your free account
  • If you booked a Day Pass, then the free capacity will be boosted to 10 people max before your scheduled booked time. You can use this for a dry run and set up your space. When the booking time comes, your capacity will be increased to the capacity you purchased.
  • If you are running a non-profit community, you can also be eligible to apply for extended Freemium 25-people plan (link below).
  • For public educational organizations using SpatialChat for larger groups, an additional 15% discount is now available for annual team plans (just contact our sales and my colleagues will tell you more)

  • Invite users by link - now you can add your Team Members and Guests by simply using a special link. Following this link they are going to be added to the team with a pre-defined role and the best thing is that you don't even need to know their emails🤎 
  • Element locking - sometimes we need to protect our elements on the Map from other users. We've added Element Locker for Admins and Moderators so they can simply lock elements so nobody can do changes to it without unlocking💚 
  • Payment card changing - if you don't have enough money or your card has expired don't worry! You can now change payment data in your Plan details or provide another card on the Checkout page😎
  • Stop video looping - we have a lot of cases when using SpatialChat users need to stop the video from repeating the loop when it's synchronised. Now you can do it just with one click in element settings😌 
  • White-label on the Login page - good news for our dear customers with white-labeling! When you've customised Welcome Page we will carry over this customisation to Login Page automatically and your users will feel at home🏡
  • New restrictions for avatars - we noticed that some of you had troubles with avatar images uploading caused by resolution restrictions set to 1024x1024. Now you can upload bigger images up to 2048x2048🙀

  • Duplicate Space - now you can duplicate any of your Spaces inside the team just with one click. And we will copy all of your settings and resources inside.
  • Invitation with pre-defined role - now it’s easier to invite new Team Members! You can pre-define roles for Team Members when you create an invitation and after accepting we will add them to the team with specified roles automatically.
  • Visualisation of sound spreading - one of things why you liked SpatialChat it’s our sound mechanic but how to understand where to place your videos or gifs in your event Space for the best experience or how to define the destinations for making separated groups in one room? Now you can do it easier than ever just move your avatar and you will see the borders of your sound spreading as well. Magic is right here 💚
  • Screen sharing and problems - now the Internet has a lot of changes and instability that’s why some problems can occur with users’ sound or quality of screen sharing. We’re working very hard with our providers and made some hot fixes for you in this version and preparing some additional optimisation in the next👩‍💻

Changelog:

  • Start Meeting - now you can start using SpatialChat with a single click. Just tap the button “Start Meeting” on our landing page. Don’t worry you won’t lose your created Space after ending the session - just log in and we will attach it to your new account📞
  • User Accounts - it’s was of the most frequently requested features. And it’s already here. You can log in to the system and you’ll have a permanent account created, with all of your personal information, Teams, Spaces, Billing, and other stuff that you can view in your Personal Area🏡
  • Teams and Spaces - we’ve created a new concept of Teams for you. Now all Spaces are assigned to a Team and you can Upgrade your Team and add an unlimited amount of Spaces to it in the Team settings. You can also be a member of any Team or you can create your own and invite your participants there.
  • Invitations - you don’t need to send the link anymore (but still can). Just send invitations to your Team Members or Guests. They will receive it in their mailboxes and can join your Team or Space just with a single click. If your Space is set to Private, only those from the list of Team Members will have access to this Space, so don’t worry📬
  • New Plans - our plans are even easier now and should cover all of your needs. We have a Subscription and Day Pass - that’s all that you need. You can purchase it yourself on our Pricing page or via the Upgrade section in your Team details. If you require more features or special parameters on your plan you can always request a Custom Plan from our lovely Sales Team🌠
  • Last Visited Spaces - you don’t need to keep in mind or write down all of your visited Spaces anymore just open your account and check Last Visited Spaces. Please, note that if you didn’t enter a Space and only stayed on the Welcome Page we will not consider this as a visit📑
  • Members and Guests - roles system is already here and you can start using it. In your Team details, you’ll find a list of Members and Guests of this Team.

    You can add participants to your Team as Members and assign them a permanent role. You can also set up Spaces visibility enabling access only to these Spaces with a specific role being active only inside specified Spaces.

    You can add Guests to your Team and assign them to Spaces too. They will be considered as a usual guest inside these Spaces and will not see your Team information in their Personal Area (Those guests can also invite other guests to visible spaces)🙀

    Your Team Members and Guests can also get access to the Private Spaces of your Team if they are allowed to. On the different side, you still can invite participants to your Spaces without inviting them to the Team. Just set a Space to Public and share the link to the Space with them.

    You don’t need to promote your participants to Moderator (ex-Host) every time they enter a Space - just promote them once in your Team Member list 💚

Important thing - we’re going to keep the old way of authorisation!
There won`t be any changes in entering the space, except a new screen before the Welcome Page with the login/Continue as Guest buttons:

  1. Login with the email or sign in as a guest.
  2. You, as an admin, can switch off the Public Space option, and "Continuous as a guest"  will disappear. It means your participants will need to Login with the mail.

Dear friends,

This is to notify you that the new SpatialChat release and downtime is scheduled for tomorrow, March 2nd, at 10PM EET.

The old (currently running) site will be ONLINE throughout the migration, however any data created in SpatialChat (room settings, uploaded images, chat messages, etc.) from 10PM EET and approximately until 11PM EET (until release is done) might be lost.

After release (approx. 11PM EET March 2nd), it is estimated that 15% of users might experience issues with SpatialChat, including the complete inability to use the service.

The number of users having these issues will gradually decrease to 0 within the next 48 hours.

This is due to some providers and equipment around the world being incorrectly configured and not respecting DNS TTL rules.

We hope this guide will help in case this affects you.

We will do everything we can to minimize impact, but it's a big move that we're making.

Dear SpatialChat Community,

We've been restlessly working on a new significantly re-engineered SpatialChat since last summer.

Our goals for that release are to make SpatialChat:

  • More secure,
  • Faster,
  • More scalable for future,
  • Capable of integrations with other products (like Google Calendar, Miro, Figma, Google Docs, etc),
  • Simpler in terms of the billing logic - no more participant-minutes!

Thoughts about participant-minutes

Although for us it was a straight-forward approach to put participant-minutes (our internal infrastructure cost is participant-minutes based), it was hard and unpredictable to control the usage for our customers. Although I need to personally thank each one of you for understanding this concept.

Now after millions of people used SpatialChat, we’ve collected some data and patterns around predictability of such usage, and also we’ve become one of the largest worldwide customers of our infrastructure vendors with your support - this allowed us to be able to scale infrastructure and get rid of participant-minutes.

New pricing

  • SpatialChat will be free for up to 25 users, 1 space per team limit and participant-minute free.
  • Meaning that on average it is more awesome than zoom. You know. The zoom :)
  • There will be Day Pass, Monthly and Yearly plans for your one-off events or remote team.
  • Day Pass will be at $2/user/day.
  • Monthly plan will be at $7/user/month.
  • Yearly plan will be at $6/user/month billed annually.
  • Options will be available to upgrade to more spaces per Team.
  • There will also be unlimited event options if you are conference company or events agency.

More secure

As you know SpatialChat has been an anonymous video communication service from the beginning. Now we are adding user accounts, authentication, and guest invitation logic to our product. You will be able to manage who exactly can participate in your space: your team members or invited guests. If you need your space to be open in anonymous mode as before - we thought about this and kept an option for your space to remain public. We will share more news about the changelog after we release an update.

Migration plan

  • Starter Plan will be moved with the same parameters but without any participant minutes (120 capacity, 5 rooms in Space available, $50/month). Click here for more details.
  • Release deployment will happen starting from Monday, February 28th 10 PM (CET) and can affect the system until Wednesday (March 2nd).
  • We’re going to:
    • Migrate all the data like (Spaces, rooms, settings, elements in Rooms, billing info).
    • For each Space, we will make a team with this Space. After the release, you can add more than one Space to one Team.
    • If you have more than one Space for one account (email address) we will make a Team for each of them with their own billing info.
    • After the release, you won’t need an Admin link anymore. You can just invite people through the Users section in your Team details and pre-define a role for each of them. If anybody will use an Admin link after the release we will ask this user to auth and after that add him to the Team which connects with this Space with the role Team Admin.
  • During the release there might be some trouble with:
    • Images/backgrounds/gifs/videos and other materials inside Space,
    • Video or audio inside Breakout or Stage rooms,
    • Connection to Spaces,
    • Messages in Room Chat of Direct Chat, 
    • Other problems like losing something or somebody.

  • Raise Hand on Stage - now you don’t need to promote users to Host role in order to go on Stage anymore. They just can Raise their Hands and you as an Admin can give your permission. You don't even need to be on the Stage yourself.
  • Video in Stage - it’s one of the most frequently requested features. And it’s already here. You can pin your own video in the Stage room when no speakers are present. You also don’t need to pause it or delete when presenting - just go on Stage and it will hide until you leave the Stage🥳

Synchronization for video elements

Now you can turn on/off synchronization of the Video element for all users in your Space. Idea: try to place a pre-event countdown to inform your guests about starting time.

Let`s go step by step:
- Add video,
- To see the action bar, just click on the video frame (only admin and host),
- Switch on or switch off synchronization.

Spawn Spot

Guide your audience in the right direction. Now you can create a special area in every room where new users will appear. Spawn Spot element view is available only for admin.

  • Audio Rooms - now, you with your teammates can make a new type of room with audio-only for discussing any topics right in your Space. Small talks or a serious dialog about environmental problems - doesn’t matter! Up to 17 speakers and up to 3000 listeners simultaneously! 
  • Add Content - now you can share all your content for customization through the Plus button and edit it with one click or pin it forever.
  • Text blocks (Beta) - now you can try to add on the Map a new type of content - blocks with any text and change it as you like.

Audio room (Beta)

Host virtual audio room for live discussions with up to 17 speakers and 3000 guests at the same time. To gather guests in the audio chat room, just share your space link. It also works perfectly on mobile devices.

How to create an audio room

1. As an admin, go to the "ADD ROOM" section (lower right corner);
2. Out of three room types, choose "Audio Room";
3. Press the green "Join" button on the toolbar and start a conversation;
4. To add a new speaker, you can promote guests as a host or respond to the Hand Raise option.

We have built it by following your suggestion on improvement. Now, it will be easy to add text or insert hyperlinks directly to your space. Also, you can style and add background to your text as you like. Pin anywhere in your room to have a permanent position.

On April 22nd, 2021, some users experienced service downtime, which started at around 5:40 pm CET and lasted until 6:20 pm CET (11:40 am - 12:40 pm ET).

The cause of the problem
A DDoS attack caused this problem. Our engineering team saw this in our real-time monitoring systems and reacted immediately.

How this affected some of our users
There were spaces that users couldn’t join due to server overload caused by this DDoS attack.Our team resolved the issue in 40 minutes.

Solution
The solution was to identify and block sources of malicious traffic as well as scale our backend infrastructure and improve load distribution to handle several times more requests than usual.To avoid similar problems in the future, we’ve prioritized our work to address our systems’ threat detection and scalability earlier than was previously scheduled.
